Four Points Bulletin

The Los Angeles Arboretum is a 127 acre park located in Arcadia, just an hour and a half from Oceanside. In the late 1800s the land was owned by Lucky Baldwin, Arcadia’s founder and first mayor. In 1947, almost four decades after Lucky’s death, the land was jointly purchased by the State of California and the County of Los Angeles, with the purpose of creating an arboretum for public use. The purchase included Baldwin’s guest house (Queen Anne Cottage) and his carriage barn, both of which are listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. Queen Anne Cottage, originally a gift for his sixteen year old (fourth!) wife, was used for the opening of the television show, Fantasy Island.

There are plant species from all over the world, categorized by regions. Also, there are over two hundred peafowl roaming the park, of which we saw six. (They are so loud!) Being Super Bowl Sunday, it was a good day to explore the park. There were less people than usual for a Sunday. We had so much fun looking at all the wildlife, flowers, and plants, as well as running around on the grass. We will be back for sure, but not until fall probably. March starts to get busier as there are more flowers blooming. We love the Los Angeles Arboretum.
