The neoclassical California State Capitol building was completed in 1874 by one of San Francisco’s oldest architectural firms. It is registered as a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. Luckily it was restored in the 1970s instead of being condemned (it was voted upon by the Legislature). It cost $65,000,000 and took six years and thousands of workers and artisans to complete what became one of the nation’s largest restoration projects. This building stands to represent California’s past, present and future.
The capitol building is surrounded by California State Capitol Park, filled with orange trees as old as building itself, camellias, historical landmarks, and friendly police on horseback.
