Four Points Bulletin

Travels north, east, south, and west of our Oceanside home base.

Flying from Los Angeles to Tokyo takes about 12 hours. Adding in the drive to the car park, the shuttle to LAX, waiting at the airport, the flight, three trains and a short walk to our Airbnb it was about 20 hours before we were settled into our apartment in Horikiri, a quiet suburb about 30 minutes outside of Tokyo proper. (We are staying up the stairs, past the statues in the last picture.) This is my fourth trip to Japan but the first time I have flown into Haneda (HND). Haneda is a much better choice as it is twice as close to the city than Narita is. Although it is a little rough taking public transportation right after a long flight we jumped right into Japanese culture, participating in the main transportation for Tokyoites. We bought a one month travel Suica card at the airport (adding about $30 to the card which can be reloaded as needed) and have used it for all of our transportation payments (buses and subways) and even used it to buy things in vending machines! It is so convenient. I seriously love this country. I am so excited to explore it with my husband, daughter and niece (for the girls’ first trip abroad and my husband’s first time to Asia!).
