Episode 16 of the current series of Kīlauea’s eruptions was a sight to be seen. The eruption was at Halemaʻumaʻu crater within the summit caldera. The lava fountains reached heights of 600 to 700 feet. Hazards included volcanic gas emissions, windblown volcanic glass (Pele’s Hair) and tephra, so keeping the visit short and sweet was key. Pele’s hair is amazing. It is formed when molten lava is stretched and spun into thin strands by gas bubbles bursting near the surface of vigorous lava fountains. These strands can be up to a couple of feet long but are only about 0.001 millimeters thick, appearing as golden yellow hair-like fibers.

We are so fortunate to be on an active volcanic island during an eruption event. It is times like this that makes me regret not studying to be a volcanologist. The power of our planet is incredible.

That line, “We are so fortunate to be on an active volcanic island during an eruption event.” is SO YOU. I love, love, love this post. You are amazing. Great photos.

Wonderful post! When we visited Hawaii in 2017, we took a helicopter tour of the Big Island and watched as steam rose from the ocean – underwater lave flowing into the ocean. I’ll never forget that sight.
    Great pictures!
