Travels north, east, south, and west of our Oceanside home base.

Traveling with kids is not like traveling without kids. There is a balance between seeing what adults want to see and having a willing participant. Knowing that Zoo Miami participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (zoos and aquariums that we get free or reduced entry to being members of an associated zoo) we took advantage of the discount and the buy in. Zoo Miami in interesting. It seems you can get just a little closer to the animals. The highlight of the afternoon was when an elephant walked happily straight to us, excitedly waving at us like a long lost friend. They also have a collection of birds that I have never seen before. Zoo Miami has a robust bird conservation program, including protecting its flamingos. Their protection is a priority. During two intense hurricanes zoo employees housed flocks of flamingos in the restroom (a remodel has now resulted in the constructed of separate emergency flamingo housing).

I couldn’t go to Miami and not get a cuban. Surprisingly I was able to find a vegetarian cuban at Cubatón Sandwich Shop in Miami Beach. It was truly incredible, a great first experience. From there walking around Miami Beach and being completely surrounded by incredible art deco made for a perfect day. I would have liked to have spent more time on Ocean Drive, famous for its art deco hotels and restaurants, the fancy Lamborghinis and Ferraris that cruise down the one way street in first gear, as well as its features in movies and shows such as Scarface, the Birdcage and the series Dexter. It was surreal and I cannot wait to return. Miami Beach has ‘mi’ written all over it.

You guys really see it ALL. This is a great post. I’ve been to Miami only once and now really want to go back! Fabulous photos and wonderful descriptions. Wow.

    1. I want to go back too! We didn’t get a chance to see Little Havana but I really wish we did. So it is on “the list”!

Never been to Miami – we’ve seen other towns in Florida but not Miami. I’ve heard many good comments about their zoo, and as I’m a member of many animal welfare/rights organizations I appreciate the care and dedication they take with the animals they house.
Your photos are fun! And I appreciate your insight about the differences between traveling with and without children.

    1. I have been traveling for 25 years now. The majority of that time alone. I am still getting used to traveling with child…
This was my first time in Miami. It really blew my mind. I am so thankful I speak Spanish! It is often Spanish first, English second.

I don’t often read your posts about locations outside of North San Diego County, but this one was interesting — thanks! Thinking of going to Fort Lauderdale/Miami for spring break. What was that fabulous drink you pictured and can you walk around drinking?

    1. Hello. Florida does not have any open container cities but any place along Ocean Drive makes you feel like you are walking around drinking. But instead you are stationary and everyone is walking and driving by you. Ha. The place we went to was Carlyle Cafe and they have Happy Hour every day from 3-6. We chose it because it was close to a park. I am sure there are better places along that strip but convenience was key. The drink was good, a spicy margarita. And it came with a light up ice cube.
