North Jetty Beach is located where the Siuslaw River enters the Pacific Ocean, part of the watershed directly north of the Umpqua River. Oregon beaches are so different than what we are accustomed to in Southern California. There is often a hike to get to the beach, there aren’t a lot of people around, there is beach grass, it is cold, and it is often covered with objects we don’t find on our beaches, like driftwood. Driftwood is a reminder of the force of the ocean, that it can transport such huge pieces of fallen trees. At North Jetty Beach people have taken the smaller wood pieces and custom built houses, the only houses you will find right on the water’s edge, another distinct difference between the California and Oregon coast.
I have been summering on the Oregon coast for the last 15 years and love the beaches. If you are heading south, a stop south of Bandon is Face Rock Beach, my favorite. There are seastacks both on and off shore, a gorgeous beach and a huge sea cave that is accessible at low tide. The cute little town of Bandon is worth a stroll as is Florence. Enjoy.
