Mono Lake is a 65 square mile terminal lake located right off highway 395. The preserve was created to protect the tufas, prominent calcium carbonate spires which are formed by the fresh water under the lake mixing with the salt water within the lake. Mono lake was created over a million years ago, it is one of the oldest lakes on the continent. Swimming in the crystal clear lake is permitted and highly recommended.

This might be one of my favorite posts of yours. I love Mono! I have passed it dozens and dozens of times only stopping a couple of times and never getting in it. What a wonderful series of photos. WOW.

    1. I was actually surprised it is allowed. Ha. The water is cold. Be prepared.
