Travels north, east, south, and west of our Oceanside home base.

If you like historic towns bursting with Victorian architecture then Ferndale is the place for you. The entire town of Ferndale is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Established in 1852, Ferndale is now known as the northern gateway to California’s Lost Coast. It’s our second visit here but I feel like we have just scratched the surface in seeing everything it has to offer. Next time we are staying longer.

I love FERNDALE. Forbes named Ferndale one of AMERICA’S PRETTIEST TOWNS! “From its well-preserved Victorian-era main street, to its five-minute drive from California’s magnificent, undeveloped Lost Coast (more about that later), Ferndale is a surprising trip back in time, with just enough modern quirkiness to make it unique.”

Walking down Main Street, one can see why Ferndale was chosen as the 1950’s era town of Lawson, in the Jim Carrey movie The Majestic (2001). Not to mention the CHEESE. Oh man, the cheese. I love this post, Brady. Great photos. WOW.

We visited Ferndale many years ago on the way to visit the Redwoods. I fell in love with the houses – especially a pink house with lace curtains in the windows. Charming, but I’d hate to be the one who has to paint it.
