Baker, Nevada is the closest town to Great Basin National Park. In summer months, there is more action here but during off season, there is not one restaurant in sight. There is a non-manned gas station and a small general store in a small hotel (with the nicest owners, one of which worked as the superintendent of Great Basin National Park up until a few months ago). As you drive around Baker you see remains of a time that once was. This area used to be a Scandinavian Mormon establishment in the 1800s. There are outhouses and ice houses and mining cabins in impeccable condition (and some that are not). Two nights in Baker (leaving us one full day in the park) was the perfect amount of time to see it all.
