Not too far from our campsite we explored what is known as the South Loop of Alabama Hills (south of Movie Road and Witney Portal Road). There are definitely less people in this area but still plenty of things to see and do. We found interesting rock formations, a creek with countless dragonflies and a small mine. The Alabama Hills have a long history of mining, fifteen of which are still active. The mines are marked on the map with a shovel and pickaxe crossed over to form an X.

Not sure how I missed this post. Anyway, the rock formations are remarkable, and the little rose is a beauty!
I love the heart shaped rock. Yes, a unique place like no other. And rich history, too.
