In 1969, San Diego voters passed (by an unprecedented 76%) a six million dollar bond to build the Wild Animal Park (now the Safari Park). The goal was to bring visitors closer to nature, in Savanah habitats that one may experience on an African Safari. When the park opened in 1972, 3,000 people came to see the almost 1,000 animals residing in the park.
Fast forward fifty years: 5,000 people visit the park every day, with opportunities to see over 3,000 animals. One of the most recent additions to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is the platypus exhibit, the only zoo outside of Australia that houses this monotreme. This zoo only gets better with age.
That is a gorgeous tiger! The Safari Park is high on my list of must-see places. Great pictures.
It is magical. The animals have so much space but you still see them (it’s not like Jurassic Park…).
