Garvan Woodland Gardens is the botanical garden of the University of Arkansas, a gift from a local philanthropist who hand selected every specimen planted here over a period of 40 years. The 210 acre garden sits on a woodland peninsula, almost completely enveloped by the Ouachita River. The towering pines provide shade to those exploring the trains, waterfalls, flora and fauna below. This gift to the University of Arkansas is a gift to all.
Surprisingly, we aren’t only here to see the amazing botanical gardens, but the manmade structures located onsite. Anthony Chapel was designed by associates of a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright. The 57 feet high ceiling, made from intricate interconnecting beams and windows, lets in natural light while exposing the woodland canopy. Between the walls and the ceiling there is almost 10,000 square feet of glass. It is a very popular wedding venue so it is important to check the events calendar before visiting the gardens, if you want to take a peak inside.
Located within the Children’s Adventure Garden is my new favorite treehouse. It is whimsical and unique, and gives visitors a birds eye view of the lush surrounding landscape.
Arkansas is a beautiful state.
The ceiling structure of the church evokes tree canopies. Beautiful! Another place on my must-see list.
I never thought about that! But you are right, it totally does. There is a similar church in Arkansas, but in the Ozarks. That one is older and is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. It is smaller than Anthony’s Chapel. So you have choices. 🙂 But you can’t beat the botanical gardens. It’s a two for one.
