King tides are a result of the moon, sun and earth aligning in combination with the proximity of the orbiting bodies (the closer they are, the more of a gravitational effect). It only happens a few times a year but is especially exciting because the extra low tides expose my favorite intertidal organisms to my some of my favorite organisms (we found four octopus today). I don’t know if there is any better entertainment than spending hours scouring the tide pools.

Thanks! I have never seen such a small sea star. I actually wouldn’t have seen it as I had my sights set on an octopus but my daughter insisted I turn the rock back over because it was hiding there. Young eyes. Ha.
