Borrego Springs is just a two hour drive from Oceanside. In just 120 minutes you go from a cool ocean breeze to hot desert air. Borrego Springs is a funky, artistic, sleepy, little town with a lot of history. The town was founded in the 1880s but it hasn’t grown like Palm Springs has. With a current population of 3,000, Borrego Springs doesn’t offer a huge variety of restaurants or events, but it does sit right in the middle of California’s largest state park, Anza Borrego Desert. And anyone interested in desert flora, fauna and scenery doesn’t need to be lured out for any other reason (although the life size metal sculptures are an added bonus). In our case, we specifically made a trip to Anza Borrego Desert for the desert night sky. Anza Borrego is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, meaning light pollution is restricted (although the moon didn’t get the memo). The Perseids have peaked, but we came to see some straggler meteors. Although we didn’t observe as many as we hoped, the ones we saw were glorious (the first ones ever for our daughter), and the constellations were beaming.

Thank you! Its worth a drive for the night sky alone. There is way too much light pollution near us. And then the moutains (on our way to the desert) aren’t reliably clear. So glad we have options!
