Elvis Presley purchased Graceland for $102,000, 22 years after he was born in a two room home his dad built. Elvis loved his family and shared his wealth with them, inviting his parents and grandmother to live at Graceland with him. It is still a family home, owned by his daughter, who stays at the house as she chooses, the upstairs bedrooms closed to the public. The privacy is necessary since the only US home more visited than Graceland is the White House.
Elvis’ home is like a time capsule, an ultimate tribute to the King of Rock and Roll, decorated just as he left it. I especially loved the peacock stained glass in the living room and the fabric lined walls in the pool room. When Elvis wasn’t filming movies and doing concerts he was entertaining his constant string of guests at Graceland. It was one endless party filled with riding horses and golf carts, eating and drinking, watching movies, playing pool and playing music. In the end, it was too much fun.
Oh, I agree – those peacock stained glass windows are stunning! I imagine Graceland is one of the highlights of your three-week long journey in the South. I remember those kinds of ‘60’s styles and original TV’s of the late 50’s and 60’s as well. I think my parents bought our first color TV in the mid-1960’s…I would imagine the gardens on the property are beautiful as well and well-maintained. Every day is a highlight. There has been no one favorite day. Graceland was no different. It was very interesting.
