The start line for the “world’s toughest bicycle race” has materialized annually since 2006 in none other than my favorite city, Oceanside. This year is the 40th anniversary of the international transcontinental bike race, Race Across America. From the pier, racers bike right past our residence, along the San Luis Rey bike path, continuing on to eventually traverse 3,000 miles across twelve states. The solo racers left four days ago from the same location, taking up to twelve days to complete the course, the team racers (who left today), may take up to nine days. The fastest competitors will ride 23 hours every day until they reach the finish line in Annapolis, Maryland. Statistically, half of the racers we gave good luck fist bumps to will drop out before completing the race. It is grueling even for these heavily trained ultra endurance racers.

We had so much fun. This is the first time we have been since we are usually away on vacation already by this time. Hopefully it works out to go again. We loved being able to interact directly with the racers!
