The San Elijo Ecological Preserve is one of the largest wetlands in San Diego County and it is conveniently located along both sides of interstate 5 in Solana Beach. The 1,000 acre reserve protects the land where Escondido and La Orilla creeks encounter the Pacific Ocean. The most popular hike in the preserve is Annie’s Canyon Trail, a super short, super narrow slot canyon, with a well built multi level metal ladder, which leads to beautiful views of the marsh and ocean below. It isn’t a long hike but the slot canyon is neat and it is close to home. We will be back.

The rock is Torrey sandstone (which we have a lot of in this area). Very white, except for the rusted portions.

I could have sworn you have been! Seeing the path from the freeway all these years I was always curious about it. I had no idea the path leads to Annie’s Canyon which I have heard about forever!
