Travels north, east, south, and west of our Oceanside home base.

Just thirty minutes from our home base in Oceanside, perched on a cliff overlooking La Jolla Shores, sits Birch Aquarium at Scripps (a public outreach center for UCSD’s Scripps Institute of Oceanography). The Aquarium was established in 1903. Its name was later changed to Scripps in order to honor financial supporters Ellen Browning Scripps and her brother, E.W. Scripps. (The Scripps family had deep pockets.)

Birch Aquarium is small, but it is so close. They care for over 3,000 marine animals, plenty to observe in a morning, on this beautiful day in February. We will be back after summer, to welcome little blue penguins to their new San Diego home. I sure hope they like year round summer!

Oh my gosh that photo of A1 with the scuba diver is priceless. And the jellies… my favorite! When our sons were little (now 30 and 35) we had a membership to the Birch and went often. What memories this post evoked. Such exploration and wonderment. Thank you for the trip down Memory Lane.

    1. It is a neat little aquarium. A quick underwater explore.
