Lake Calavera Preserve sits on the border of Carlsbad and Oceanside. It contains a series of interconnecting trails, so you can choose your own adventure. Today we veered to the east onto a new path, away from Mt. Calavera, towards Oak Riparian Park, where we found many more boardwalks to explore. The boardwalks take you over wetlands, a sensitive and protected habitat. The kiosk along the route reads that only 10% of San Diego County’s wetlands remain. These wetlands are important because they clean the water, prevent flooding, reduce erosion, nurture wildlife, and keep toddlers entertained for hours (this was even before we found the swing). The bonus for today’s outing is that our good deeds for the week are done, we helped countless black snails make it safely across the path.

I grew up with endless outdoor adventures as well.
Months of my childhood were spent without a pair of shoes ever touching my dirty, callused feet. I am sure I would have attended school barefoot if it were permitted.
