This is Oceanside’s 20th annual Día de los Muertos Festival, but the first time in years it has been back in Downtown. (I actually haven’t been once since it was moved to the Oceanside Mission, although I heard it was a poignant venue.) Today, over a week before Día de los Muertos technically begins, the entire Downtown area was filled with altars, marigold flowers, chalk art, painted faces, candles, skeletons, and trunk altars. It was a site to see. So many beautiful things displayed to celebrate the life of those no longer with us.
That is so very, very cool. You do live in the most vibrant community, all just steps from your home. What a lucky girl. I love this post and would have thoroughly enjoyed exploring with you and A1. Thank you! I wish it lasted for more than a day but I see why it doesn’t. One woman I spoke with spent five hours setting up her altar. So it isn’t something you can dismantle and set back up the following day.
You should have been there to smell the marigolds. It was intense.
