Niki de Saint Phalle is a French born, US raised, world renown artist known for her creative “outsider art”. Her only American sculpture garden, Queen Califa’s Magical Circle, is located at Kit Carson Park in Escondido, California. Every time I come here I notice something I hadn’t noticed before. Every time I come here I am in awe that this incredible work of art is located so close to home. From mythical creatures to abstract art to the snakes that surround the sculpture garden (and envelop the mirror maze), the colors, the tiles, the mood; this place really is magical. It’s unfortunate she died the year before it was completed, but what an amazing (self financed) gift she left to the city.
