Old Sacramento is a 28 acre National Historic Landmark and State Historic Park that features dozens of restored and recreated Gold Rush-era buildings. It is located right next to the Sacramento River, and includes a restored river paddle boat that is now a permanently moored hotel and restaurant.
Old Sacramento is also the terminus of the first transcontinental railroad as well as the pony express (so much history in a small amount of space!). Within the Old Sacramento State Historic Park is the most incredible three story train museum. The California State Railroad Museum contains over twenty beautifully restored trains, as well as an entire floor of miniature trains (and a Thomas the Train play area). We were limited on time so didn’t get to take it all in, but are already discussing when we can return.

Thanks for the tip! The museum was so much better than we could have imagined! We didn’t know about the underground tour. We will consider that and the little train trip that the state park offers too!
