Four Points Bulletin

Travels north, east, south, and west of our Oceanside home base.

The nonprofit, Butterfly Farms, was established in 2012 out of concern for the decline of native butterfly species. How fortunate that the owners had so much forethought to comprehend that education, conservation, and research is going to be necessary to save these beautiful pollinators. Monarchs alone have diminished from millions to thousands over the past forty years. Without the efforts of organizations like Butterfly Farms the plight of the lepidopteran would be lesser known.

Butterfly Farms has rented a plot of land from Leightag Commons in Encinitas for the past five years. The butterflies are on exhibit in a 3,000 square feet vivarium, the largest native butterfly enclosure in Southern California. Unlike the insanely busy and short-lived Safari Park Butterfly Jungle, this place is open daily from April through November. We really lucked out today since just an hour earlier a box of envelopes arrived from one of their suppliers, each envelope stuffed with live butterflies, which an employee was releasing right in front of us. It is incredible how many local places there are that haven’t before been on our radar. I supposed it is a testament to how many amazing things there are to do in our neck of the woods.

  2. One of your most fascinating posts!! What a beautiful and magical place!! The founders of Butterfly Farms in Encinitas are to be thanked and commended for their efforts to protect the endangered native butterflies – from extinction perhaps! Loved all your pics, too – the one of you and Eric, and A1, in her bright summery dress! What a magical place – whether 2 or 102!! πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸŒŸ

What a fabulous day with you my friend! And your sweet family. I loved every single moment of it and since it is there until Nov. 1, we’ll be going back. So dang fun. Far exceeded any expectations and the people working there were lovely. You make magic happen. “Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” -Nathaniel Hawthorne
