Batiquitos Lagoon is a nature reserve ran by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. It is one of only a few remaining tidal wetlands in Southern California. There is a two mile long trail on the north side of the lagoon that allows visitors an opportunity to see distinct habitats (mud flats, coastal sage scrub, and saltwater marsh). The highlight of the trail is a huge Canary Island date palm root ball that has a eight foot long trail around the base of one of the palms. I am certain A1 would have been content spending the entire time on root ball loop, but I am glad that we expanded our radius a bit.

This lagoon is one of our favorites spots in Carlsbad! That said, we are so focused on trying to see the huge variety of birds that can be found there, we have never seen the root ball. I want to climb on it too. Very, very cool.
The root ball is about a quarter mile east of the nature center, on your left. It’s pretty neat!
