Borrego Springs is an interesting place to visit. It is completely surrounded by Anza Borrego State Park (the largest California State Park, and the largest desert state park in United States) and so gets plenty of tourism, but seems to be stuck in time. With just over 2,000 residents, the little light pollution earned Borrego Springs a designation of California’s first International Dark Sky Community. You don’t come to Borrego Springs in search of endless tourist opportunities, you come because you want to be in the desert. Before heading back home to Oceanside we visited more of Breceda’s metal sculptures, and then took a stroll through a wash near Palm Canyon trailhead in Anza Borrego State Park. We don’t hike any more, so there is not need to share how many miles we trekked. We play in sand, dig with sticks, and try to pick up ants. It isn’t about the total distance but what we see in the little distance that we do cover.

Distance doesn’t matter. John Muir had it right, “Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” Fabulous view of Borrego. I can’t wait to go next month.
