In 2020 Live Oak Park turned one hundred. Part of the dedication ceremony in 1920 included voting on a name. Live Oak Park was unanimously chosen. Its history goes back much further than a century. The now twenty seven acre park was originally inhabited by the Luiseño people, who depended on the oaks to make acorn meal. The mortars used to grind the acorns are evidence of their ancient tradition.

Growing up in De Luz, we used to come here as kids, and Murrieta Elementary School used to do a yearly field trip to the park. In the 80s there was a super fun gigantic metal merry-go-round which has since been removed and replaced with something kid friendly. The playset is great but the entire park is a playground. Climbing trees, stomping on boulders, and playing hide and seek is just as much fun.

Oh man, we pass this park every time we head your way and we’ve never stopped! Are there trails, too? I love the grinding stone history and your childhood history. Way cool. That photo of A1 covering her eyes is a classic! Thanks for introducing me to yet more fun “pretty close to home”.

    1. There are some walking trails that are within the park. But they aren’t hiking trails. The park is more about picnicking and meandering.

  2. Simply gorgeous photos on a February day hinting of breaths of spring!! 🌿 A-1 looks so animated and happy roaming around leaving her little footprints in the dirt…where her Mommy used to have fun! How delightful! And Daddy and Uncle Alan played at same park, as well, back in the ‘80’s! Had no idea this special place celebrated its 100 th Birthday last year in 2020! Love, love those magnificent TREES!! 🌳🌳🌳

    1. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful place so close!
      Oaks are magnificent.
Who knows, maybe we all unknowingly played together as kids!
