Buena Vista Lagoon became California’s first ecological reserve in 1969. It is one of my favorite, secluded places to go for a walk in Oceanside. The Buena Vista Audubon trail is just a quarter of a mile long, but it is a loop and with a toddler in charge, going one direction and then the other and then back again… it adds up. I love walking over the boardwalks, through the tall tule, and being surprised by birds popping out to say hello. A1’s loves pouncing in puddles, and identifying pickleweed. So, after a rain, the Buena Vista Lagoon Ecological Reserve has something to offer everyone.
Although the reserve is a freshwater lagoon we found a few crustacean carcasses, evidence of our proximity to the ocean.
