The dam that creates the reservoir called Dixon Lake was built in 1971, as part of the California State Water Project (whose original purpose was to supply water for Southern California). Dixon Lake is stocked with several species of fish, but is most famous for its giant, world class largemouth bass. There are fisherman trails that run along the water’s edge, making it a fun place to hike for people of all ages. I wasn’t sure if it would be crowded over this three day Martin Luther King Day weekend, but camping is currently closed, as are boat rentals, so there are less people than usual. I always love coming here, but having a little more elbow room is much more relaxing.

What a beautiful winter day for a hike…and Dixon Lake in Escondido looks like the perfect spot…!! A1 looks happy and involved in these beautiful surroundings, and how lucky is my two-year old granddaughter to have such adventuresome parents to guide her through an array of fabulous places!!
