Mammoth Cave sits on the very edge of Dixie National Forest, just eight miles from the cabin we rented in Duck Creek Village. The cave is a lava tube, formed by flowing lava and cooling water just a few thousand years ago. Mammoth Cave is one of the largest lava tubes in Utah (the longest section is 2,200 meters). I guess winter isn’t a super popular time of year to visit because we were the only ones there (and it is a popular spot). I think winter is an ideal; besides the lack of tourists, we enjoyed the contrast between the dark basalt cave mouth and the white snow. The entrances to the cave are just a few minutes walk from the parking area. We sent Eric in first, to make sure it was passable. This was A1’s first caving experience! She absolutely loved it. She was looking for tigers, but she wasn’t too disappointed about not finding any.

Four Points pointer- The snow covered forest roads wouldn’t be possible without four wheel drive. We managed just fine in the Outback. Also, the owner of the cabin we are staying at said that a typical Duck Creek winter would mean more snow, and getting to the Cave would not possible.
This is one of your best blogs ever!!! The scenery, the personal pictures, and the extraordinary views of Mammoth Cave are breathtaking!!! I, for one, have never been in a cave before…so these photos were really my only glimpse (except for scenes in movies perhaps)!! I did not even realize these caves existed before ( aside from Mammoth Lakes, CA.). So happy your little one is having these thrilling family adventures, and both of you as well!! A five 🌟Review!!

That is about my speed of spelunking! I love it all. The snow is a wonderful contrast. You got your wish… a white New Year. Woo hoo. Keep the travel escapades coming. I’m right there… vicariously.
So now, my little granddaughter has added spelunking to her repertoire. You’re doing a great job. It reminds me of vacations with my parents. we too visited Mammoth Cave.

We lucked out. It wasn’t too cold. We were hoping for more snow, but in the end this was more manageable with a toddler.
