Snow Canyon State Park is not covered in snow. Now that that is out of the way, the 3,400 acre Utah State Park is part of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, which protects the desert tortoise and its habitat. Part of the park contains petrified orange Navajo sandstone (sand dunes that have been cemented into stone). Hundreds of millions of years ago this area was covered with time grains of quartzite, transported by wind to this very spot.
It is so much fun, for people of all ages, to tromp all over. We found lichen, ice, concretions (small round masses of minerals embedded in the sandstone), and spectacular views. A1, of course, was set on hiking all by herself. She loves the great outdoors, and being completely independent. The area is not a trail but a general hiking area, so she could choose her own adventure.
