The San Luis Rey Bakery has been in business (at this very location) since 1968. The building, however, is much, much older. Built in the late 1800s, before the bakery opened up its doors and let out its aromas, it was a gas station, a grocery store and a saloon. (I choose the bakery out of the four options.)
The San Luis Rey Bakery is just a few minutes walk from Heritage Park and the San Luis Rey Mission. It is worth a stop if you are ever in the area and want a sweet treat, without a doubt. My stop today had to do with my sister, who specifically asked if I could bring pastries from the San Luis Rey Bakery before I headed to her house in the morning. I over did it a little with the treats, but once you are there, and start filling up a box, it is hard to stop! Honestly. And their bread, which they cut by request, is so delicious. So, of course, I had to get that… Self control just kind of flies out the window there.
My favorites are the bread pudding (yes, bread pudding can be enjoyed by people of all ages) and the cheese filled puff pastry. A1 just wanted things eyes.

Jimmy Buffett said it best, “I’m living on things that excite me, be they pastry, or lobster, or love…” I am so going to that bakery as soon as we’re in SoCal again. That cheesy contraption is calling my name. Thank you for leading us to decadence. We couldn’t do it without you, Brady. YUM.
You have been before, right? It is right next to Heritage Park. You can visit the miniature train museum again on the same trip. There is a lot to see in that little area.
One more quote I have to share, “All food starting with p is comfort food: pasta, potato chips, pretzels, peanut butter, pastrami, Pizza, pastry!”.
